Welcome to the Better Mileage 101 website.  We have a number of pages with relevant content concerning ways to maximize fuel savings with today’s high fuel prices.

Here is a question posed on the USPS site that is very interesting:

Two families trade in their vehicles for more fuel-efficient ones. If both travel the same amount each year, which will save more fuel by making the change?

  • Family 1 decides to trade in their 4-wheel drive Jeep Patriot (25 avg. MPG) for a Civic Hybrid (50 avg. MPG).
  • Family 2 decides to trade in their 4-wheel drive Chevy Trailblazer (10 avg. MPG) for a 4-wheel drive Dodge Dakota (20 avg. MPG).
Which family will save more fuel by switching vehicles?

Did you say, Family #1?  Actually, Family #2 saves more.  Watch the following video for a good expanation.

The population that desires motorized transportation is growing.  As China and India industrialize, the citizens will become wealthier and their first big purchase is likely to be a vehicle (the house can wait).  Since everything is supply and demand, as demand goes up, supply will either need to grow with it or the price of fuel will rise to balance the demand.  In other words, if fuel becomes very expensive, the number of people at the lower tiers of the automobile economy will be priced out of it.  They’ll have to go back to bicycles, public transportation or motorcycles.

Even if you can afford fuel for your vehicle, you may be unhappy about the larger percentage of your paycheck that is spent on fuel.  You are the people we’re targeting with this website.  We want to provide tools, tips and how-tos for increasing the gas mileage of your car and maximizing fuel savings.
